Latin Biblical Drama in Czech Lands (16th cetntury)
The aim of the project is to conduct the detailed research of early modern Latin biblical drama written in the Czech Lands, with special focus on assessing the place of Bohemian Latin plays in the context of the genre of biblical and Neo-latin drama.
Latin biblical plays have attracted much less attention among the research community, than similar texts written in Czech. So far, no monograph is available and except for "Abrahamus patriarcha" by J. A. Comenius, none of the plays have been published in modern edition. Within the project, we will analyze these dramas mainly from the point of view of their placement in the context of the genre of biblical plays (comparison with texts from other countries and Bohemian vernacular drama) and in the context of Neo-latin drama (connection of Latin Bohemian dramas with ancient Roman drama and their comparison with other Neo-latin dramas in this regard).
We will summarize the results of the research in a monograph, which will also include a critical edition of all four recently unpublished Latin Bible plays from the Czech lands and a digital edition of Latin texts.
The project was supported by the Czech Science Foundation (GAČR) under No. 22-03909S and the solution was started on 1. 1. 2022.
